interesting repeated announces of a convergence between #Italy and #Germany - need generates unusual partnerships

mutual coaching, with a mutual albeit probably unbalanced investment on change

as, in a multicultural relationship (or so I was taught and experienced over a dozen times, on a personal and business level), usually one of the partners has to take the lead in adapting toward a Weltanschauung

and the one coming from a culture farther away from the shared aim, has, at first, to work more "by the book"

so, get ready (if it is to be successful) for Italy striving to become, in the short term, more German than Germany, to mark the distance from its 2,000bln EUR past:)

Shakespeare & duets

  • Apr 27 00:07
well, this is memory week- a visit to a place called Shakespeare (I looked for a quiet spot, found one right in the middle of my extended dinner/after dinner walk), made me think again about a movie- Much Ado About Nothing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107616/fullcredits#cast ).

I must confess- I enjoy as much Kenneth Branagh's movies from Shakespeare as I enjoy watching the fast-talking West Wing

but there is a specific character that since Summer 2008 comes back to mind, times and again... the one played by Michael Keaton (hilarious)

the "second funniest role in the movie" prize? goes of course to a couple- Beatrice&Benedick and their verbal duets:)

 ... study its history.

most people I talked with dramatically diverge in their interpretation, focusing on either the quarrelous past of Europe (pick any time across history after the V century C.E. and you will find wars between current EU members), or on the institutional history.

but nothing, not even the EU, happens in a vacuum- and, therefore, after WWII, I shifted toward the Cold War.

I always found quite funny how people get insulted or flatly deny that Stay Behind, or any other operation to "keep the pieces together" were just part and parcel of what is the traditional approach of any institution.

as far as I remember, even the Roman Empire played the "cultural diplomacy" game- and those deriding the "ping pong diplomacy" or "Panda diplomacy" either lost touch with reality, or, even worse, suffer of terminal cultural arrogance, assuming that anybody of course should follow their lead.

but you know the old joke? a leader without a following is

Post-scriptum (I know- it should go at the end, but it is worth writing it now): as Facebook refused my reply message... I post this as a note, an answer to a question from a friend about a picture with a cloud within a room (more akin to a cloud within a cathedral).

take it as a bit of creative writing based on few threads of reality/science/experience, not as a scientific explanation- for which I am totally unqualified:D

=====

the picture states that it is true and it is not computer-generated: how, you ask.

it reminds me of something that I heard about a building so vast, that the compounded perspiration of people in attendance would create a mist...

my knowledge of clouds is limited to toying with climatology as a teenager and my service in artillery (aerologist), when with my usual quixotic enthusiasm I ended up in a library for the Chemistry faculty studying the "tensione superficiale dei gas" to identify a formula to replace a pack…... Hi,
a frype friend asked some references for hotels in Rome
I have been in many hotels in Rome, but, frankly, way too often they are at best mis-represented: I have been in 4* that have rooms that would not deserve a 2* or 3* :-(
and beware of those 3* that are not at the street level (first floor, second floor, etc): most of those are overpriced, and I would deliver a single *
I usually reserve via venere.com (I am a customer- no business link whatsoever!)- it is not the cheapest, but on average has good discounts on the rack (i.e. official) rate; a note on Italian rack rate: prices have to be delivered to the local authorities; therefore, the price that you will see in the room is almost never charged- unless you are a poor sucker who comes at the door in a day when no rooms are supposedly available- it is not unusual to see 300/400/500EUR as the official rate, while they charge 100 :-)
I checked hotels nearby the center (Termini, Colosseo, Manzoni, Vittorio Emanuele, Barberini,…... Read more
Well, I have been coming quite often since late 1990s, but I have been resident for slightly more than one year.

I travel often outside the country, but I did not know about the beach: I knew about Bruges (of course, being an Italian), I recently discovered Gent, and I will soon travel around small towns.

But beside culture (Spring and Summer are a flourishing of events, some open air, in music, art, etc), Belgium is one of the first examples of a logistic hub that integrates the Zaventem airport into a larger economy.

The international institutions (NATO, The European Commission, various agencies) attract also a vast multinational community.

I'll focus on Brussels- If you wander around the Grande Place or Bourse or Schumann, it is quite common to listen people talking a strange mixture of English-French-Spanish... and whatever you can think about! The new EuroLanguage to come ;-)

But despite all the institutions, the town still retains a humane dimension, with…... Read more

Visit Italy

If you wish to visit Italy and would like some info, let me know.

I left my country ten years ago, and nowadays I go back usually once a month in the North and once a month in the Centre/South, only for business :-(

Once in a while I arranged to escort as an informal walking tourist book my foreign friends (from Latvija, Switzerland, UK, US, etc) in various towns

But my schedule is quite unusual: so, instead, if you want information about specific towns, let me know- either I will have some information, or I could find somebody...

Have fun- and be patient: Italians are quite friendly, but organization and planning have not been part of the Italian way of life since the Fall of the Roman Empire ;-)
