Bio

Composer and keyboard instrumentalist, Kārlis Lācis was born on 21 September 1977 in Tukums. He was educated at Kandava Children’s Music School, Kandava Secondary School, Jāzeps Mediņš Rīga Music College (1992–1997) and graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Jāzeps Vītols’ Latvian Music Academy in 2005.

Since 1995, Kārlis has been a member of Time After Time performing funk and acid. The group has participated in numerous prestigious music projects and festivals both at home and abroad. Among the awards Kārlis has received with the group are the Grand Prix at the Liepāja Dzintars Festival (1998), the Latvian music industry’s Best Debut Album award (1999). He’s also been a member of Sweetwaterz since 1999.

His work spans genres including academic, jazz and pop music. He strives to synthesise these genres and explore the possibilities of arrangements and instrumentation.

Since 1998, Kārlis has composed film and advertising music, as well as theatrical scores at the Daile Theatre since 1998 and at the National Theatre from 2000–2002. Alongside his original works, he also writes arrangements in various genres, including music and arrangements for song and dance festivals. He was the composer and arranger of the Cabaret concert performance (2003–2007). He’s also written songs and arrangements for singers Intars Busulis and Linda Leen, etc. He received the Diena newspaper’s annual cultural award for his composition, The Momentary Temptation of Choice for symphony orchestras (2006).
